The rich man in today's Gospel story is so comfortable in the lap of luxury, so content to live in his bubble world that he is oblivious to the beggar’s hungry stomach and sore body. 

The gospel today presents us with the most fundamental option of all: the option to choose God or an idol. 

We can all relate to these lost and found parables of St. Luke, these sacred stories of lost sheep and lost coins and lost children.  These biblical stories are really more about God than about us. 

The gospel passage from St. Luke uses images of building construction and waging war to make the point that followers of Christ cannot be naïve or faint-hearted or undisciplined if they want to help spread the gospel and build the kingdom of God.
