The gospel from St. Matthew outlines a healthy process for resolving conflicts and reconciling members of the Church who have been involved in nasty, even sinful incidents. In short, the process should go like this: when some hurt has been inflicted on another person, the parties should communicate honestly and directly, get outside help where needed, do their best to untie the knots of hostility, and pray for the grace to forgive and be forgiven. The Word of God today challenges us to fight fairly; to speak the truth in humility and love; to seek the counsel of others when it is needed; and to pray for the grace of reconciliation. Resolving conflicts in a genuine Christian manner is very hard to do… but it is our call, our duty, our responsibility, because we Christians love our neighbor as ourselves.
