In today's gospel, Jesus was facing threats on all sides and there was danger in the air. Still, James and John focused their attention on what reward they would gain if they just hung out with Jesus during his public ministry. So, Jesus taught his disciples how to follow in his footsteps. He tells the Zebedee brothers and all his disciples that they should never seek the spotlight, they should never crave prestige and authority over others, and they should always act as servants and not masters. And so whatever vocation the Lord gives us in life – whether it is marriage, single adulthood, vowed religious, or clergy – whatever the Lord calls us to be and to do, we must always be ready to set aside comfort and convenience and our own plans for the sake of somebody else or something else that God has in store for us.
