On Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the first coming of the Holy Spirit on the community of Jesus’ disciples, the Church. The Acts of the Apostles describes this coming in the movement of a strong, driving wind. In the Gospel today, the Holy Spirit does not come in the form of a driving wind. The Spirit comes in the form of a gentle breath of the risen Lord.
Our world today is so plagued with the still, stagnant air of selfishness. Our culture suffers from the stiff winds of secularism, materialism, and division in so many ways. Our lives are burdened with an assortment of crosswinds like anxiety over our jobs and money, and chronic worry about our health and well-being and that of our family members. And so today, we pray that the driving wind of God and the gentle breath of Christ would come our way once more. And so may the Holy Spirit of Christ our risen Lord move our hearts and send us forth today to live more confidently and consistently as people of the gospel.
