Experience tells us that when we raise our minds and hearts to God in prayer, our outward appearance may not change, but somehow things are different. Our vision of life can be broader, the burdens we carry can be lighter, and our trust in the Lord can be stronger, all because of our encounter with God in prayer. Something dramatic happened to Jesus as he prayed with his companions on that mountain top. Jesus’ face changed in appearance and his clothes became dazzlingly white. Jesus’ prayerful communion with God helped him discern what to do in his fork-in-the-road decision. The Father reassured Jesus that he was his Chosen One, his own beloved Son, and that reassurance gave Jesus the strength to carry on his mission no matter what the cost. In addition, as a result of Jesus’ prayer and amazing transfiguration, Peter, James, and John were also transformed.
In times of loss or heartache, when we face difficult decisions, there is nothing like prayer. Prayer changes everything because it sheds the light of Christ’s grace on everything. This Lent, why not follow Jesus’ lead and develop a regular habit of pausing in the midst of our daily activities, our busy schedules, to pray.
