Nicodemus was curious to meet Jesus in person, but decided to meet Jesus in darkness because he was afraid. In doing so, he took his first tentative step toward the Light of the World. During this season of Lent, Christ invites us to come into the Light and to live in the Light of the Lord. To those trapped in darkness, Christ lights up the way. And so, to all those who are wrapped in the cloak of darkness, afraid to step into the Light because they are ashamed of their deeds, reluctant to give up their sinful habits, or simply stuck in the throes of fear, sadness, or discouragement, Christ says: “come to the Light,” come and receive the favor of God’s kindness and mercy. Christ gives us the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist to help us come into the Light and stay there.
