The speaking of words is a prominent theme in today’s Scripture readings. In the passage from the Book of Genesis, Adam and Eve get caught red-handed eating fruit from the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden. And so there is an ensuing conversation between God and Adam, who points the figure of blame at Eve, who immediately accuses the serpent, who happens to be the devil. Eve’s words are honest. Adam’s words are honest. But they both lack the fortitude to take responsibility for their own choices. And in the Gospel today, we find this wild scene occurring where a crowd is speaking the worst of words about Jesus. We see in this episode how people of any time and place can misrepresent and mislabel God. And that’s why it’s so essential for us to have a healthy understanding of who Christ is, to believe that the name of Jesus is the name above all others, and that we should always use words that are true and reverent when speaking about Jesus.
