The Scripture readings today remind us of how well God feeds us. In the first reading, Moses tells his people that when they were once doing slave labor in Egypt, God instructed them to eat a Passover meal. When the Israelites were hungry and thirsty in the middle of the desert, God sent them manna and quail from the heavens to eat, and God gave them water flowing from a rock to drink, so they had the nourishment to continue on to their Promised Land. In his gospel account, St. Mark reports that when the disciples of Jesus were fearful and anxious about his safety and their own future, Jesus took bread and wine, blessed these elements and said: “take and eat it; this is my body… take and drink it; this is my blood.” My friends, to become holy people we must eat well. After all, you are what you eat. And so, it follows that if we eat the sacramental Body of Christ every Sunday and do so with fidelity and gratitude to the Lord, we will become what we eat – healthy, strong members of the mystical Body of Christ, the Church.
