Jesus teaches his followers that the reign of God is like a buried treasure that a man found in a field and, rejoicing at his good fortune, then proceeded to sell all that he had to purchase that field. In another parable, Jesus says that God’s kingdom is like a merchant’s search for fine pearls. Once found, he sold everything else he owned and bought the “pearl of great price.” The moral of these short parables is that our faith in Christ (and his rule over our lives) is the most precious “commodity” we have. Nothing can compare with the grace of faith and its blessed assets in the life of a Christian. When we are able to see people and events with the eyes of faith, we are unearthing our buried treasure. When we persevere through our trials with trust in the Lord, and his care for us, we are displaying our priceless pearl.
