Jesus faced a hungry crowd in today’s gospel. His response is the miracle of the five barley loaves and the two fish. Jesus gives thanks for this food, blesses it and distributes it, and by the grace of God, everyone had their fill with plenty leftover. The takeaway from this story is that Christ is the One who satisfies our multiple human hungers. Every week, Christ invites us to bring our appetites, our hungers here to the table of his love. We are like the crowd on the mountainside, hungry in every which way. The Mass is our version of a grassy place to recline and be fed. Here Christ forms us individuals into a community of disciples, a fellowship of spiritual companions. The Mass itself is a miracle that satisfies our human hungers, so that we can go forth and help alleviate the hungers of others.
