The readings today speak of light. On the feast of the Epiphany, we celebrate the light of Christ. My friends, our world needs light. We are trapped in the darkness of violence, of division, of injustice, of greed and corruption, of suffering on so many levels. God provides light to those who are trapped in darkness. At the beginning of this New Year, on Epiphany Sunday, we have another opportunity to commit ourselves to be people of the light. There is a wise saying that comes from the Christophers and goes like this: it is better to light one candle than curse the darkness. The sad truth is, we seem to spend a lot of time cursing the darkness, lamenting, complaining, ruminating, gossiping about this or that in the world, in the Church, in our families, and among our friends. Perhaps this is the year to let our light shine more brightly, to live our Catholic faith more fully, to learn about our Catholic faith more deeply, and to speak to others about our faith in Christ and his Church more boldly.
