On this New Year’s Day when we celebrate the feast of Mary, the Mother of God, St. Luke tells us that observing all the wondrous happenings at the crib of her Son, Mary simply “kept all the things about her Son in her heart.” In other words, she pondered all these phenomenal things about the birth of her baby, she reflected on them; she let them sink in and dwell in her heart.
We would do well to follow Mary’s lead, and pause regularly to ponder the things of God in our own hearts... how the person of Jesus informs our values, our decisions, our actions in our jobs or at home. Mary, the Mother of God and our spiritual mother, is always a good model of faith. God calls us to be like Mary, and to treasure the story of Christ’s birth that is good news for the whole world. May the Eucharist nourish us in pondering the good news of Christmas, and living it every day in the year ahead!
