Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s excerpt from St. Matthew’s gospel uses two images for the Church which speak to the mission Christ has entrusted to us. As the Church of Christ, we are salt… that is, we season the world with the distinctive flavor of his gospel, giving others a taste of compassion, forgiveness, and charity; and preserving the surrounding culture from the corruption of self-absorption and the decay of greed and indifference.  In Christ, we are also the light of the world… that is, we let the light of the Lord’s love shine before others, so that they can see for themselves Jesus’ abundant mercy for sinners, his ready outreach to the lowly, his healing hand for the hurt and broken-hearted, his sacrificial love for all.  

May the Eucharist we celebrate and receive help all of us members of the Church of Christ to be salt of the earth and light of the world in the coming week!
