Lent is not just a spiritual stamina contest, a 40-day test to see how long we can be faithful to our resolutions in the traditional practices of prayer, fasting, and charity. Lent is a time for repentance from past sins and for growth in virtue, and ultimately in holiness through a deeper love of God and our neighbor.
This Wednesday, March 2, is Ash Wednesday. The two formulas that can be used for the imposition of ashes at Mass or at a Service of the Word summarize well the spiritual work that lies ahead for every Christian:
1. Repent and believe in the gospel;
2. Remember that your are dust, and to dust you shall return.
May this Lent help us grow closer to the Lord Jesus and one another!
