Nothing sums up the Christian life like the golden rule. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This is at the heart of Jesus’ teaching in today’s gospel. The golden rule does not require that we be doormats and allow others to take advantage of us. We are certainly not called to be victims or passive spectators to wrongdoing or outright evil. The golden rule is not a mandate to be weak but a commission to be strong. The truth is that we Christians are called to resist the urge to retaliate, to play the deadly game of payback or revenge against those who do us harm. But as we all know, it is much easier to believe it than to live it.
May the Sunday Eucharist give us the strength and courage to live as Christ has taught us, and to live by the golden rule in the week ahead!
