St. Luke simply begins his gospel by introducing us to the miraculous birth of John the Baptist, the prophet and forerunner of the Lord. In doing so, St. Luke is inviting us into a whole new world of possibilities and gifts from God; and in the process invites all of us to stay with him as he tells the story of our salvation in Christ. Friends, what if we could see our lives this Second Sunday in Advent as just the beginning of God’s new work in our lives? When we dwell too much about the past or the future, we can miss the opportunities for a new beginning in the present, like today, right now! Because the readings today assure us that God always offers us a fresh start, a new beginning. Advent suggests that the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ is just a new beginning of God’s work in and through us. No matter what happened yesterday or last month or many years ago... no matter the anxiety, the worry we have about the future... God longs to create a new beginning in our lives. Today is a wonderful day to embrace with all our being the person of Christ as the Savior of our life.
