Second Sunday of Advent

The Scripture readings for this weekend are an intriguing combination of dreamy idealism and blunt realism.  The first reading is Isaiah’s vision of the coming of a descendant of King David, a righteous king or Messiah figure who would establish a reign of peace, justice and right relationships throughout all of creation.  On the other hand, John the Baptist delivers nothing short of straight talk realness and called his listeners to a baptism of repentance. Together these readings invite us to ponder God’s vision for our future happiness, and what practical changes in our priorities and behavior we may need to make in our lives so that we get there. The Eucharist, and our Holy Communion with Christ and one another that it brings, will help us make these changes.
