On this Fourth Sunday of Advent, we recall God’s promises to the human family. And we celebrate our faith that God always comes through on his promises to us. In the first reading, God promised to build a house for David. God’s promise to David, of course, was ultimately fulfilled in Jesus whose kingdom will endure forever. And in the gospel narrative of the Annunciation, the angel Gabriel promises the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and bear a child, a boy who would be called the Son of the Most High. she responds with incomparable words of faith: “Let it be done to me according to your word.”
Human beings struggle to keep their promises, but God always comes through with his. And in Jesus Christ, God has promised to love us and be with us always, and make all things turn out for the good if we place our trust in him. The hard thing for us is to trust in God’s promises, especially when we are downcast or anxious or skeptical or in turmoil. This is why we honor Mary, who always trusted that the Lord’s promise to her would be fulfilled!
