Sheep know and trust the shepherd… and recognize his voice anywhere… and willingly follow wherever he leads them. Of course, we’re not literally sheep, but we do call Christ our Good Shepherd. He is the voice we want to recognize in the din of our culture today. Christ’s voice says: “love your neighbor as yourself” and “do works of mercy for the least of your brothers and sisters.” The Good Shepherd also calls the members of his flock to be shepherds for others, and to direct the sheep toward him. How we need more men with the wisdom, courage, and gentle heart of the Good Shepherd to serve our parishes as ordained ministers and shepherds of the Church! Laymen and laywomen also have a share in the shepherding role of Christ for they are charged to shepherd the secular world to him. May we lead our brothers and sisters to Christ, each according to our vocation, each with our own unique lives of faithful love.
