The gospel passage from St. Luke uses images of building construction and waging war to make the point that followers of Christ cannot be naïve or faint-hearted or undisciplined if they want to help spread the gospel and build the kingdom of God. According to Jesus, if people really want to follow him as his disciples, they can’t let their wealth or possessions or worries control their lives, and they have to carry their own cross, as heavy as it may seem.
As a new academic and work season begins, may we embrace our own Christian dignity while cultivating a deeper respect for the dignity of others, and dedicate each new day to being a faithful disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ by picking up our cross and following his lead.
