Following Jesus has never been easy. During the month of October, we celebrate the feast days of two of the most beloved saints in the life of the Church: Thérèse of Lisieux and Francis of Assisi. These two people definitely took the road less traveled, and at times found it very difficult. The chances of any of us being declared a saint are admittedly slim, but we cannot escape some of the same difficult choices Thérèse and Francis made in their lives and the choice the curious man faced in today’s gospel. Every day we must choose our treasures — will it be the high road of personal integrity, a road that can be treacherous or burdensome, or the low, easy road of fudging on our values in order to please people and massage our reputation? Is our treasure having everything go our way or is our treasure that everything go according to God’s mysterious design? Keeping the commandments and staying out of major spiritual trouble is a good start, but it is not enough. Jesus calls us to walk the extra mile, to give the shirt off our back, to turn the other cheek, especially to those in need and those whom we may find hard to love. If we do so, we shall surely pass through the needle’s eye and join Thérèse and Francis and so many more in the communion of saints by choosing Jesus as our treasure.
