The parable in today’s gospel tells us that Kingdom gardening begins with sowing seeds. We toss our seeds of faith here and there among family members, friends, co-workers, and strangers alike, hoping that at least some of them will land on good, receptive soil, but realizing that many of them won’t. Our work is simply to do the sowing of seeds, and let God take care of the growing. We sow seeds of faith when we love others without expecting any love in return. We sow seeds of faith when we rise above our own hurt and anger, and choose forgiveness over revenge. We sow seeds of faith when we allow humility to overcome our pride and when our desire to control everything gives way to patient acceptance of God’s plan. Kingdom gardening depends on our daily sowing of the seeds of faith, hoping that at least a fraction of those seeds will produce a good harvest.
