Our spiritual predecessors in ancient Israel certainly had their share of standout prophets – take Ezekiel for example. Christians, too, have had their share of prophets over the centuries. John the Baptist and the first disciples of Christ had the unenviable task of calling people to repentance to prepare them for faith in Christ. Modern-day prophets like Dorothy Day and Mother Theresa who, in the face of indifference and hostility in their time, called people to reverence the dignity of every human person, even the poorest and the most vulnerable in the human family. But prophetic work isn’t just for the spiritual celebrities among us. It is for all of us because of our common baptism. We all have been called by Christ to use our free-will to speak the truth in love, and to resist and confront wrongdoing wherever we encounter it. By the grace of Baptism, we all have the power and the freedom to be prophets for Christ.
